Membrane proteins play critical roles in numerous cellular functions and represent the largest class of drug targets. Despite their importance, the characterization of these proteins remains a challenge and they are often underrepresented in proteomic studies. Ultimately, there fewer methods tailored to handle these proteins in part because they are notoriously difficult to study due to their inherent hydrophobic nature, low expression level, and instability outside lipid membranes. In this seminar, I will discuss our work on novel proteomic approaches to better characterize membrane proteoforms using top-down proteomics.
